Shops need good lighting!! But at what price?

From the retail giants to the corner shop lighting can influence buying decisions by prospective purchasers. Most retail stores use T8 fluorescent tubes, halogen downlights and metal halide shoplighters and wall washers. These types of light fittings are generally very inefficient.

LED T8 tubes, energy saving T5 fluorescent tubes, LED downlights and high bays can dramatically reduce electricity use together with lowering airconditioning loads without loss of light quality or intensity.

For example:

  • A 150 watt metal halide shoplighter can be replaced with a 38 watt LED shoplighter with the same physical dimensions making retrofitting a breeze. This activity will result in an energy saving of around 73%, reduced maintenance, instant on/off and can be linked to a motion sensor and daylight harvesting system. Break even can be as low as 9 months.

  • A 36 watt T8 fluorescent tube with magnetic ballasts can use up to a total of 45 watts, a simple retrofit using 18 watt T8 LED tubes will use only 20 watts of energy without compromising light quality or intensity.

  • A 50 watt 12 volt halogen downlight can easily be retrofitted with LEDs resulting in 80% energy savings, reduced fire risk, reduced maintenance and air conditioning loads.

The cost of retrofitting may be reduced with federal and state based rebates and incentives.

Go Green Alliance can audit your existing lighting and recommend low energy alternatives. We can also deal with rebates, financing and installation providing a complete turnkey upgrade.

New retail stores or those undergoing upgrades are now required to comply with the Building Code of Australia restrictions of a maximum of 22 watts per square metre. Go Green Alliance can assist shop owners, designers and architects to comply with these requirements.

RETAIL LED LIGHTING

BENEFITS OF LED

  • Broad Spectrum: L.E.D’s emit light of any colour without colour filters. This is more efficient with lower overall costs.

  • Cool Lighting: L.E.D’s radiate very little heat, no UV and do not fade fabrics.

  • Dimming: L.E.D’s can very easily be dimmed.

  • Efficiency: L.E.D’s produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs.

  • Focus: L.E.D lights can be designed to focus light. Incandescent and fluorescent lights need reflectors and shades to point light in a certain direction.

  • Long Life: L.E.Ds have a relatively long life with up to 70,000 hours of useful hours of light compared to 12,000 hours for fluorescent tubes and 2,000 hours for traditional incandescent bulbs.

  • Non-Toxic: L.E.D lights do not contain heavy metals or gases compared fluorescent bulbs.

  • On/Off Resistant: L.E.D’s do not burn-out with frequent on-off cycling and light up very quickly each time.

  • Shock resistance: L.E.D’s are solid so are difficult to damage with external shock unlike traditional bulbs which are fragile.

  • Size: L.E.D lights can be produced very small making them more versatile than incandescent or fluorescent lights.

  • Slow failure: L.E.D lights dim over time compared to the burn-out of incandescent bulbs.
